Gerard Reilly Wellbeing Day

20-June-23
Gerard Reilly Wellbeing Day

The Gerard Reilly Wellbeing Day, formerly known as the Gerard Reilly Tournament took place on Monday 19th June 2023.

This very enjoyable event has evolved since it was set up in 2009 by Damien Keaney, Corlurgan NS. It is supported by Gerard’s family and the three local schools Corlurgan, Crubany and Killygarry.

The tournament was introduced to bring local schools together and draw attention to Gerard’s devastating condition, Muscular Dystrophy. Gerard’s muscles deteriorated over time which left him in a wheelchair. Despite this Gerard actively engaged in Gaelic, soccer and even formula 1. Gerard was independent and sociable. Martin Reilly, Gerard’s younger brother says that Gerard never let it get him down.

Gerard is an inspiration to all of us who face challenges and difficulties. He remained resilient and positive at all times and lived a full life until he passed aged 17 in 2002.

Gerard was supported by his family and the local community. He was included in all sporting events that he enjoyed. He especially loved following his brother Martin in soccer and fully expected him to play for Manchester United! The wellbeing day has focussed on a number of sports including Gaelic, rounders, running and walking. Sport and exercise is for everyone and is integral to our wellbeing and mental health. We hope all children can find a physical activity that they enjoy.

Thank you to the principals in the three local schools Ms Timmins in Corlurgan NS, Ms Hayes in Crubany NS and Mrs Prior in Killygarry NS for supporting this Annual Wellbeing Day in memory of Gerard.
